The River's Secret
Ari sat at the edge of the Blue Nile, watching the water sparkle in the morning sun.
In the year 2127, the river was clean and full of life. It powered the beautiful city where Ari lived, a city of quiet technology and gentle rhythms. But today, something felt different. The water seemed to be... humming.
"I wonder," Ari whispered, touching the gold beads threaded through her braids, "if the river remembers everything it has ever seen."
"Water doesn't have a brain, Ari."
That was Ayo, her best friend, skipping stones across the surface. Ayo was always moving. Running, jumping, laughing. His family had come from Trinidad two generations ago, and he still had the Caribbean sun in his smile.
"Maybe not a brain," Ari said. "But maybe a memory."
That's when she saw it. A flicker of gold, deep beneath the water. Not a fish. Not a reflection. Something else.
A butterfly rose from the river. But this was no ordinary butterfly. Its wings shimmered like pure gold, leaving trails of light in the air.
You came from greatness, a voice whispered. Not in her ears. In her heart.
"Zeena?" Ari breathed. She didn't know how she knew the name. She just did.
The golden butterfly circled once, twice, then dove back toward the water. The surface began to glow.
Come, the voice said. Remember what was forgotten.
Ari stepped toward the light.
"Ari, wait!" Ayo grabbed her hand. "If you're jumping into a glowing river, I'm coming too!"
"You don't have to," Ari said. "She didn't call you."
Ayo grinned. "I know. I'm choosing."
Together, they jumped.
And fell through time.

The Ethiopian Highlands · Thousands of Years Ago

Long before there were coffee shops on every corner, before grown-ups lined up each morning for their favourite hot drink, there was a curious goat herder named Kaldi in the mountains of Ethiopia.
Legend says he noticed his goats dancing. Yes, dancing! After eating the bright red berries from a certain tree, they had so much energy they wouldn't sleep.
The herder tried the berries himself. He felt awake. Alert. Alive.
He told the local monks, who made a drink from the berries. It helped them stay awake during long nights of prayer.
That tree was the coffee plant. And those people, in those highlands, gave the world its most beloved drink.
Every coffee shop. Every morning cup. Every "I can't function without my coffee." It all began in the mountains of Ethiopia.
But here is what matters most: a simple Ethiopian herder saw something strange and did not ignore it. He paid attention. He wondered. He experimented. He shared what he learned.
That is curiosity. That is the spark that changes the world.
